he is an idealist who likes to put his random thoughts on film, can't seem to make up his mind on what
the hot-headed matriarch who spews tons of ghetto philosophy goes to jail for running a foul of the law
but the main story in Perry's latest stage play to be brought to life on film centers around a young
prostitute (Keshia Knight Pulliam in an attempt to shed her image as Rudy Huxtable) and her old
childhood friend and eventual college buddy (Derek Luke) who just happens to be an up-and-coming
hot shot lawyer who is working in the prosecutors office.
After the initial set-up of both storylines Perry quickly falls back on his stock pile of clichés. Madea has
no new tricks up her sleeve. You've seen it all before but her antics still manage to be extremely funny.
A woman snags her parking spot at a local Wal-Mart. So Madea proceeds to fork lift flip the woman's
car. And it's funny. Madea plays the dozens with her brother jabbing with jokes older father time. But it's
funny. Madea continues to drive her son nuts who should be used to her over the top antics by now. But
it's funny.
On the serious side Luke as the prosecutor attempts to rescue his long time friend from a life on the
streets at the risk of losing his high-strung girlfriend who also works in the prosecutor's office in the
process. Of course there is a dark secret between the prosecutor and prostitute and everything isn't
what it seems with his girlfriend. All Tyler Perry trademarks. Perry whose stature in Hollywood
continues to elevate cast Academy award nominee Viola Davis as a social worker. Luke and Davis
seem oddly cast for a Tyler Perry movie but add a level of professionalism especially in a crucial scene
together that for five minutes almost make you forget you are watching a Tyler Perry movie.
For all of Perry's many talents and amazing ability to entertain especially his core audience story
structure is still his kryptonite. "Madea Goes to Jail" is a messy movie. It lacks structure but is more
competently shot. The title suggest that we will get plenty of Madea who has become an iconic comedic
screen character. But Perry actually serves up more drama than comedy however, Madea's larger than
life personality makes up for her lack of screen time. Hey Tyler, more Madea next time. More Madea.
