Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
MOVIE REVIEW

SHAWN EDWARDS SAYS:
Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett-Smith and David Schwimmer.
The animated characters of “Madagascar” like to “move it.” In “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” they are
from the New York City zoo and ended up in Madagascar. “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” features the
return of the first film's vocal talents: Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, Jada Pinkett Smith,
Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer, and Andy Richter as well as a couple of new characters.
But the script that they are working from just isn’t as fresh or funny as the original.
The first ten minutes of the movie unsuccessfully pokes fun at Disney’s 1994 animated classic “The
Lion King.” The most interesting part of the sarcastic flashback sequence is that the late Bernie Mac
is the voice of Alex’s father. The old gang then proceed to head home on a make shift airplane they
have repaired that crash lands in mainland Africa only after a couple seconds of being in flight.
The disappointing thing about “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is the filmmakers abandoned the
friendship between Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) and Marty the zebra (Chris Rock). They also give the King
of the Ocelots voiced by Sacha Baron Cohen very little to do in this movie. Remember how he stole
the show in the first movie? Not this time. Jolts of comedic brilliance are once again supplied by the
penguins and a couple of literary chimpanzees. Admittedly these guys deserve there own movie or at
the very least more screen time. The later would have made “Madagascar: Back 2 Africa” a better
movie.
The animation is flawless as the vibrant colors leap off the screen. And the incorporation of hip music
once again livens things up. But overall “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is just mildly entertaining and
just mildly funny. It mostly gets props for casting several African Americans to voice the main
characters. But ‘Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” is not a classic.
