Now I love an underground story like the rest of you, and "The Great Debaters"
definitely classifies. Loosely based - and I mean loosely based - on true
events, the flick is the story of a group of black college students and their
kick-butt debate team back in the day. Hell, they were so good they beat white
folk. That's the good. The bad is the entire movie looks like one of those
Sunday night movie of the week joints. It's also kind of sappy and a little corny.
"The great debaters" is directed by two-time Academy Award winning D-Weezy
(Denzel Washington) who is a far better actor than director. Oh well, at least I
learned something and I was entertained. Too bad the extras are wack on the
two-disc special collectors edition.

I have to admit that I never watched “Get Smart” the TV show. I know what it was about but never
watched a single episode – not even on DVD. Just never really cared, to be honest. And that’s
probably why I enjoyed the movie update of the ‘60s cold war era TV show.
I have no connection whatsoever to the original series, which is what has killed me when watching
other movies adapted from classic TV shows. Most don’t work, but I found “Get Smart” to be funny,
somewhat clever and loaded with way more action than I expected. I’m not the biggest Steve Carell
fan. He’s adequate as the goofy spy dying to prove he can play cloak and dagger games with the big
boys. I have always admired Anne Hathaway for her career choices. Always choosing very
sophisticated scripts. But it was fun watching her earn a pay check for looking gorgeous, kicking a
little butt and having silly fun. But the clincher was my man Dwayne Johnson. The former wrestler
turned leading man plays the sidekick in “Get Smart.” Johnson isn’t really sidekick status anymore,
but the role was perfect for him to showcase his charisma in a big budget summer blockbuster
without having the pressure of carrying the entire movie. Although Johnson clocks very little screen
time, it’s fun watching him poke fun at himself as the super smooth agent who is a bit of a klutz.
Overall “Get Smart” is the funniest movie I’ve seen so far this summer. It’s also the perfect
combination of comedy and action.
